Learn A Few Tricks Of The Coffee Trade

Posted November 22nd, 2008
Categories: Artsy Stuff

For those of you who hate coffee for reasons I can’t possibly understand there here is something you may like. My wife on occasion makes home crafts and the thing she makes that I like the most are her coffee scents. This is so simple yet very appealing, and the cost is under $20.00. Here is what she does. She takes a large glass bowl and fills it with whole coffee beans. This part is up to you. My personal favorite is the Sumatran Dark Roast, but my wife likes vanilla flavored coffee instead. She then gets a vanilla scented candle and lights the candle and places it in the middle of the bowl full of beans. When the candle wax hits the coffee beans the room starts to smell like Vanilla Coffee. It is a relaxing smell that lingers for hours, and our guests love it. My wife even sends them as gifts, and our family and friends really do love it.

A Coffee Can Grill

Let’s say you have kids and you are going camping. Did you know that your used coffee cans could be used as a grill? Yes! A coffee can grill! Let me explain. The first thing you do is take an empty coffee can and wash it inside and out. Then dry it completely. Take a can opener that you would use to open a can of juice, and start punching triangle holes every 1 inches to allow for venting. Take the plastic lid and place it over the side you just punched to prevent it from getting dirty. Pack a candle (unscented) about 3 inches wide by 5 inches tall. This is a cool project for the kids. When you set up your campsite and are ready to eat light the candle and remove the plastic lid from the coffee can. Then place the can over the candle and let it sit for about 7 minutes. Place a ground beef patty, or hamburger patty on top and cook it the way you like it, and “Presto!” You have just used your disposable coffee can grill. My kids love it!

An Under The Hood Blower

If you have teenage boys that are ready to drive then listen to this cool trick I did when I was 17 years old. I took a large Folgers coffee can and using a hole punch I punched a hole in the center of the can. I then emptied the coffee in the trash, because I can’t stand Folgers coffee. Then I went to the junkyard and found a fan motor with fan blades attached for a Chevy S-10 pick-up. Most of the fan motors for GM are the same, but the Chevy S-10 was what I used. I then made holes in the can for the screws that hold it in place, and the fan blades in the center. After cutting out the center with a pair of tin snips I placed the fan motor inside the can. I then took the can to my car and looked for a place on the firewall to mount it. After mounting it using a modified u-bolt made from threaded rod heated and bent I began to measure the distance from the can to my air intake. I drilled two holes in the can one at the top on the side and one in the bottom. I used silicone and a 2 PVC elbows was its size and found hoses that I ran from the can to my intake and the other I secured to the side of the firewall leaving it connected to the can only. I ran my power source to the fuse box and ran a toggle switch to the fan motor.

This was a fun project, because it challenged me every step of the way. I attached this unit to my 1973 Pontiac Lemans GTO. It had a 400 big block with Headman Headers and a Crain Fireball 2 race cam. Did I mention the 4 speed standard transmission? When I was in 4th gear I was doing about 60 mph then I flipped the toggle switch and floored it. My tires chirped and I went back in my seat. My speedometer on the car went to 120 mph. I promise you it was buried past that. I was at an old abandoned airport runway when I tried this, and I recommend not racing in any public place. It is illegal and you can hurt or even kill people. A fast automobile can be a dangerous thing. Use common sense before testing this on your car. I have to warn you if your block is made of cast aluminum you could over heat and blow a rod. My friend did this to a Ford Escort GT 1989. The head was badly warped and the bearings were fried.

Coffee cans are very useful. I have used them for storage of nuts and bolts, or any other hardware items I may have. My kids store pencils and crayons in them. Many people store childhood memories in them kind of like a time capsule.

Select Your Flooring Carefully

Posted November 21st, 2008
Categories: Assistance, Home Improvement Center

There are many factors which need to be thought about when deciding what kind of

href="http://www.yourfloors.co.uk">flooring to go for. Getting new flooring fitted in your home

can breathe new life into it and can be a great way to improve your living environment. It may not

be as expensive as you think either.

A big consideration on what flooring to choose is the function of the room it will go in. Flooring

which is suitable for the front room may not be appropriate for the kitchen or bathroom for example.

Some of the more widely used types of flooring are carpet, vinyl, wood, and laminate.

Laminate flooring can be a great alternative to wooden flooring if you are looking to achieve a wood

effect floor for a fraction of the price. Laminate flooring consists of a sheet of MDF with a wood-

effect plastic surface attached to it. The downside of laminate flooring is that whilst it is

scratch resistant once it is scratched it is impossible to repair. Apart from that it can still be a

perfect choice for a kitchen, where the plastic coating provides an easily cleanable surface.

Conversely solid wood flooring would not be a good idea in a bathroom, or in fact any room which is

likely to get very wet. Some woods are more vulnerable to the wet than others.

If you are planning to fit a wooden floor, its critical you have the right surface to fit it on.

Ideally your existing floor needs to be flat, and dry. There are options however to counter uneven

flooring problems, such as laying ply throughout, or employing an underlay to create a floating

floor.

Often laminate flooring is sold as a product you can assemble without help which is a great way of

keeping costs down. Solid wood flooring requires however a higher degree of DIY competence, so it

can sometimes be advisable to get solid wooden floors fitted professionally which can add

substantially to the cost.

One point to remember many people do not realise when they measure their room to calculate how much

flooring they will need ” is that it is crucial to include a 10mm gap around the edge of the room

for the wooden flooring to expand and contract.

As an integral part of any interior design scheme, it is crucial to select the right flooring.

Whilst wooden or laminate floors can be ideal ” often for a more chic minimalist look; carpet can be

a better option if you are trying to achieve a more traditional home feel. The important thing is

you take into account the various factors you need to consider before ordering new flooring.

How to Make a Terrarium

Posted November 21st, 2008
Categories: Artsy Stuff

When I think of the New Year, I always want to do a project or bring “newness” to my surroundings. About three months ago, my husband and I put together a terrarium. It was quick but creative. This is something you could do with any age child or teen. Also, it makes a wonderful hand made gift. Friends and co-workers will love it!

I read that a true terrarium has a top but that top could cause more of a challenge for the plants to grow. We bought a clear glass container with a wide opening. You can usually find these at the pet department in stores such as K-Mart or at a Pet Store.

It’s really easy and all of these products are easy to find. You will find them in the same place (as mentioned above).

Here is what you do:

(1) Fill bottom of glass with 1 inch of gravel.

(2) Sprinkle a thin layer of crushed aquarium charcoal on

gravel.

(3) Add moist potting soil about the same size as the depth

that your purchased plants were potted in.

(4) Remove plants from containers, loosening roots with

fingers.

(5) Arrange plants in your container, putting tallest in center

and others around it. Position plants close together.

(6) Cover with colored gravel.

(7) Wipe smudges from glass.

My terrarium is made of 3 beautiful orange cacti and I don’t remember what the smaller plants were but here are some suggestions:

(1) Rex Begonias,
(2) Ferns
(3) Petite Peace Lilies and
(4) Baby’s Tears.

Place the terrarium in diffused sun because direct sun could burn the plant and cause it to bloom less.

Use distilled water for moistening your plants. Remember, there is nowhere for the water to escape, so water carefully with a kitchen baster or an empty spray bottle. Only water your plant when you notice it starts to dry out. Moisten until water appears in the bottom gravel layer.

You can make this simple (like the one I made). See photo below. However, if you really want to explore other possibilities, here are a few web sites that I found to be helpful:

Rangoli: The Knot Work of India

Posted November 20th, 2008
Categories: Artsy Stuff

In the April of 2003, I rented an apartment for a month in Chennai (Madras.) Though I had been to the northern parts of India several times, this was my first visit to the southeast coast. Walking in the early mornings, I’d find intricate knot work patterns drawn out free hand with flour on the streets in front of homes. Initially, my question was, how did these designs, so common in Celtic knot work, end up in India?

These artistic scrolls were known as Rangoli, which is a combination of two words: “Ranga” means God and “Oli” means to be pleased. A devout Hindu friend explained to me that the designs were a daily offering, an artful expression of worship not only for the deities, but also for the birds that feast on the flour designs during the day.

The tradition is truly ancient. Hindu epics thousands of years old describe cities where Rangolii were drawn with camphor powder or multicolored stones. One myth tells how a women’s picture of flowers was so realistic that it attracted bees. The designs were also done with red earth and even depicted on top milk carefully poured in a water vessel. The ability to draw these designs was considered so important that it brought status, particularly to a daughter-in-law seeking to impress her new mother-in-law. Even today, there can be a bit of playful competition between house holds.

The technique looks simple enough, but really requires a skill since it is done free hand. Rangoli images start from a matrix of dots which are connected by lines to create images.

I saw floral and knot work motifs, but it is also common during festivals to depict Hindu iconography, such as the conch, lotus or sacred Sanskrit letters. In Rajastan, which is in the northwest part of India, the Rangoli images are painted on the handles of swords or knives carved into animals. Rangoli is also painted on coconut shell used as gifts during weddings. Since only a general outline is depicted, the images lean toward the abstract.

Rangoli designs can be seen as a form mandelas, which in essence is a sacred, archetypal symbol sometimes used in meditation practice. Zig-zags, circles, triangle or any shape and color effect consciousness.

Among the most elaborate mandalas are drawn by Tibetans who spend days creating detailed mandalas in sand before ceremonially wiping the image out.

Though the act of creating these patterns in ritualistic and domestic settings are layered with meanings rooted deeply in these cultures, I believe it is safe to say that Rangoli teaches about reverence and the transience in our human experience. The beauty of the moment, the sunrise and the day, comes and it goes.

For me, seeing the art drawn on the street was a fascinating and delightful experience which enabled me to connect with these people on a universal, human level.

Duvet Covers - For a Quick Bedroom Makeover

Posted November 20th, 2008
Categories: Artsy Stuff

Duvets or comforter covers are very versatile on a bed. If you want something that is different for your bedroom makeover, you may find expense is an issue in fancy, unique, well made fabric. Designer labels are pricey, especially if you aren’t shopping during a white sale. The versatility of the duvet makes them worth having and a necessity for a comforter. Transform an inexpensive comforter into a stylish work of art with a unique duvet cover. Duvets are great for your kid’s rooms. As the child grows, change out a print or pattern. A teddy bear duvet might be good one day but you blink and he’s ready for a NASCAR print. Find fabulous duvets online and in your favorite bedding stores.

If you can’t find exactly what you want, consider making it yourself. Even a novice can pull this off this sewing project. The magic of Velcro and fabric glue can also eliminate the sewing. Just think of a duvet as a giant pillow case with some sort of closure at the end. That doesn’t seem too hard does it? A pillow case keeps the pillow clean as you sleep on it, and the duvet does the same thing. All types of bedding should be soft and supple since it is next to your skin. You are going to be making this yourself, so don’t scrimp on fabric. Find good quality fabric in a soft cotton or blend. I love flannel on the bottom and it is available in lovely colors and prints. It will be repeatedly washed so look for one that is yarn dyed. You can even find two sheets on a clearance table that are a steal. This would be the easiest because no cutting is involved. Wash and dry either fabric or sheets before you begin, as this will curtail shrinking disappointments down the road. If you have not already purchased a comforter, think about how it will look on the bed. Do you want more of an overhang on the sides or is your partner prone to stealing the covers? If so, you might want to buy a size that is a little larger than your size of bed. The completed presentation might look more finished if you do so.
• Measure your comforter and add one and a half inches to the width and three and three fourths inches to the length allowing for seams and hems. If you have sheets, just look at the dimensions on the package.
• If you have chosen sheets, I would suggest not buying two of the exact same thing. Make things more interesting by buying complementary patterns and colors so it can be turned over for a new look. Don’t be afraid to mix it up a little.
• If you have chosen fabric, you must piece it together as you won’t find fabric with the width you need. Here is where creativity comes in. You can choose lots of matching patterns and colors and stitch them together to make the top of your duvet, just measure how big you want your “blocks” of fabric to be and go from there until you have enough for the top of the duvet. If this sounds like too much work, just use one or two fabrics and do the measuring.
• Place the wrong sides together and stitch with a quarter inch seam along the top sides. If a sewing machine is a foreign thing to you, there are many types of glue on the market that will do the job as well.
• You can create a fanciful closure by sewing large buttons at the top, folding it over and stitching ribbons to the other side of the top. Make sure it represents a nice fold and tie the ribbons to the buttons. Nothing could be simpler. For a more country look, take strips of torn fabric and stitch them where you placed the ribbons. They will fray, but that’s the point. Your duvet cover will take on a shabbier chic look.
Let the creative side come out and makeover your bedroom in the style and color that you choose, and save money at the same time.

Posted November 18th, 2008
Categories: Great Shopping Tips

Being without a girl in the city where you get couples in each and every bar and disco can be a lonely feeling. I personally know of four without a girlfriend friends who go on dates each week and each week they are lonely because they are still without a partner. In the wonderful city of London there are a huge collection of beautiful escorts, these breathtaking working girls are the perfect gift to give to yourself if you are without a partner. Book the hottest Escorts from London Agency Lucy Bond.

Escorts in the capital city of the UK are incredible and lovely and have a high education making them great companions as well as brilliant lovers. The escorts in London are traditionally more expensive than anyplace else like Manchester, the reason for this is the call girls tend to be of a higher class.

Escorts have been made famous with the tv show Secret Diary with the delightful Billie Piper. In the tv series the call girl is made out to be glamorous and rich and always looking charming. The show is a top rated show in the United Kingdom and many guys have seen it and have now booked a call girl. This has helped to fuel the increase in single boys feeling much happier and better about the choice of women a single man has in London.

Dramatically Increase Your Sales In 24 Hours

Posted November 18th, 2008
Categories: Sell Offs

Every eBay, retail, flea market, and wholesale seller is looking for ways to dramatically increase their sales. Sellers are constantly looking for ways to supercharge their sales. The following sales tips can give you a substantial increase in sales within 24 hours.

Sales Boosting Tip #1

Advertise a loss leader. A loss leader is an item which you are selling at a price that is so low, that you are actually losing money on it. The benefit of having a loss leader is that it will attract plenty of attention from customers. When customers come to buy your loss leader you will have an opportunity to sell them some of your other items.

Sales Boosting Tip #2

Tie in a promotion with a popular fad. Let’s say that there is an exciting movie playing at the theaters. You can sell, or give away, merchandise related to the movie. This type of a promotion works great because it benefits from the high popularity of the movie.
In addition to a movie tie in, you can apply this strategy to a popular religious, political, national, or local event.
How about a bakery selling a special cake in honor of a national holiday?

Sales Boosting Tip #3

Increase your prices. Sounds strange doesn’t it? You would think that by raising your prices you would turn away business. But in reality, by raising your prices you are telling your customers that your products are high quality and they deserve the higher price.

An interesting spin on this ideas is to have one extremely expensive item for sale. Advertise that your store sells the most expensive cake in the world. Think of how many people will come in to your store out of curiosity to see the cake. Once inside, they can buy your regularly priced merchandise.
