Ebay Auction Pricing Strategies.

Posted December 23rd, 2008
Categories: Sell Offs

If your items aren’t selling, then you might have a bad pricing strategy. There as many pricing strategies in the world as there are buyers - if you look at two businesses selling the same thing, often the only difference you’ll be able to find between them is pricing.

The ‘Few Dollars More’ Strategy.

Here’s something you might not have thought of. If you set your auction’s starting price to what you would usually charge for Buy it Now, while setting the Buy it Now price a few dollars above, you can make a profit by setting off an interesting psychological reaction in the buyer’s mind.

Here’s what they’ll think. They want the item, but why should they bother bidding for it? After all, they could use Buy it Now for just a few dollars more, and be sure of getting it! Doing things this way makes the value of the Buy it Now option extra clear to the buyer, and makes them more willing to pay extra for the privilege.

The ‘One Dollar Less’ Strategy.

This is simple, but requires you to keep an eagle eye on your competition. As soon as they start a Buy it Now auction for an item you stock, start an auction for one of those items yourself. Match the title closely, but price your item one dollar less than theirs. This will mean that your auctions will sit together in the search results, and who’s going to see both and go for the one that’s a dollar more expensive?

The ‘Free Shipping’ Strategy.

Buyers really hate paying for shipping. With Buy it Now, you might find it easier to incorporate the shipping cost into the main price of the item, and then write “free shipping” in the auction’s title. You’d be surprised how many buyers would prefer to pay one price including shipping for the auction, instead of having shipping added on at the checkout. Again, this is psychological: they pay the same at the end, but it doesn’t feel like they’ve paid an unnecessary ‘extra’ cost for Internet shopping.

The ‘Go for It’ Strategy.

If you’d like a slightly more risky strategy, try this. List your item for the maximum duration (ten days), starting the listing on a Thursday so it goes across two weekends and finishes on a Sunday. Set the starting price to the minimum (one cent).

What you’re trying to do here is give bidders as long as possible to discover your auction, so that they push the price up themselves. Pay for a few upgrades like bold and highlight, to give them a helping hand. If you do this right, you can make a much bigger profit than you would have with any Buy it Now price, especially with a medium or high value item.

Since running your auction for longer means that more people see it, you should always take the longest duration of ten days, right? Not always. In the next email, we’ll talk about how long your eBay auction should run for.

Right Boat for the Right Purpose

Posted December 23rd, 2008
Categories: Fisherman's Den

When looking out for a boat you must be aware of the fact that no single boat can do everything you desire. Every boat is designed for a specific purpose and is best suited if used for that purpose.
Boats designed to sail on the weekends cannot be used for a passage through the ocean or river. Quick acceleration and load carrying capacity cant be find in a same boat. You can buy a boat only for one or the other purpose such as for race or fishing in a pond etc..

One must first describe the usage of boat before choosing the right kind of boat required. The answer to the question, what type of boat should be purchased completely depends on the usage of the boat. The purchaser should decide the purpose of the purchase of boat and its usage.

Every other human being has different desires, beauty is the first consideration for some people whereas some like boats which can simply solve their purpose. It completely depends on the usage of boat as beauty is very important for sail boats as you’ll spend a majority of time floating and sailing around with many people looking at your sail boat. When someone looks at your boat, you will desire to make sure that it looks amazing.

Speedy boats are primarily needed to race instead of cruise. The ideal boat for speed demons are those that can cut through the water, creating plenty of waves. But there are many cruising sailors who want their boats to move very fast like racing boats with the comfort of cruise.

Some fishermen have very simple requirement and that is a simple fishing boat but some use trackers and other boats that are designed for fishing with some automatic tactics. There are many models of boats available for fishing as fishing is one of the most popular boat activities.

Before purchasing a boat take your time, weigh your options, check your budget and then select the right boat for yourself. After all, its fun boating in water whether its for work or to enjoy!

Holiday Heartbreak

Posted December 21st, 2008
Categories: Psychology + More

It is the season to be jolly, as all the songs and magazine articles will tell you,but for some of us that is not how we feel.
Family is the most important part of the Christmas season, the laughter, the visits of far away relatives, the children with their
games and of course, last, but not least, the Turkey!!

I remember many happy holiday times when all my family were gathered together to celebrate this wondrous season,we would share family stories, look at old photographs, play silly games and just revel in being together.

Those days are now gone.

I lost my mother several years ago, just befor Christmas, and it made for a very sad holiday. My father had passed away many years before, so it was very important to my brother and I that she was
with us and our families, at Christmas. I remembered how during the first Christmas that my father was absent, looking at the Christmas
cards and realizing that I could not send a “To My Parents” card.

As time goes by, memories fade and are replaced, and for the next few Christmas seasons ,we created new memories, with our mother in the middle of our celebrations. These happy times, unfortunately, were not to last long.

When my mother passed`away, it reduced our family gatherings to
my brother’s family and my own. I once again looked at the Christmas cards and felt so sad ,that I could not send any greetings to”My Mother at Christmas”.

Just 2 years later, my loving brother passed away, from an illness that devastated the family. My grieving knew no bounds, and I was now, the only remaining member of my family.

I did not celebrate Christmas that year, the feeling of sadness was too deep and I could not feel joy. As I looked at the Christmas cards ,the feeling of loss was overpowering, as it seeemed that I had no one left in my immediate family to send a card to. Father,Mother,Brother, all gone, leaving me alone.

One day, my friend asked me to visit her sister in hospital ,and I agreed.I do not like visiting hospitals as a rule, but
she was a good friend and I did not want to disappoint her.
It was just before Christmas, the ward was filled with flowers, the patients doing their best to smile and take part in the Christmas festivities. One elderly lady, I noticed, had no visitors at her bedside,no flowers on her tray and was lying very quietly, as if not to disturb anyone.

I ventured to her bedside and asked if she had family coming. She looked at me sadly and told me that she had no family left, she was alone.I left her bedside and went down to the hospital gift shop, where I bought a Christmas cactus plant and took it back to the ward,to the old ladies bedside table and placed it there. She looked at me with a smile and nodded her head in acknowledgement,
too feeble to raise it from the pillow.

I sat beside her for sometime, she didn’t speak, just lay with a smile on her wrinkled face, a face that had seen many years and would not see too many more days. She seemed to know I was there
and this somehow gave me a sense of peace, that I hadn’t known, since my brothers death.I reluctantly left her side, as it was time for visitors to leave. That night,I prayed for the first time in many years, and vowed to go back to the hospital the next day.I took a shawl that had belonged to my mother to the hospital, hoping to give the old lady something to comfort her.

As I approached the ward where she lay ,a strong memory of my mother enveloped me,and I found myself smiling.I gathered the shawl in my arms and walked to the bedside, only to find that the bed was empty.I was too late.

I left the hospital in a strange frame of mind,I never knew who the lady was,but she had given me something that I had lost, the feeling that life matters, that loneliness ends, that I could still reach out and touch someone ,if only for a moment.

Belgium Beer

Posted December 19th, 2008
Categories: Adventurous Life

routinely offer a huge range of good ol’ ales, sometimes as many as 400 types of beer in one place. So if choosing your drink is a bit of a problem, just go with the GoNomad tips for Leffe Blonde or Bruges’s Zot. Or (not that we’d encourage this, really) try a bit of everything. To learn a little more about the brewing process, we head to Carillon, a century old brewery located on the outskirts of the city. Here they brew according to a strange and ancient method called ‘natural fermentation’. Yeast isn’t added; instead the beer sits exposed to the air, and microbes do the rest. It is then aged for around three years. The result is about as far from lager as you can get - a sharp sour taste that has as much in common with wine as beer. Some lambics are then flavoured with fruits, and the results are a little more palatable, though the idea of cherry beer takes some getting used to.After that it is definitely time to settle into a quiet bar like La Garre in Bruges, and enjoy the Belgium of here and now. La Garre is tiny - so small it’s difficult to spot the alley it is squeezed into, but this really is the real thing - dimly lit but friendly, and a space anyone can come to. For the locals these bars are an extension of their living rooms.”

Most Amazing (and Ridiculously Simple) Trick For Stiff-Legged Deadlifts You Will Ever Read In Your L

Posted December 18th, 2008
Categories: Fitness Equipment

The stiff-legged deadlift is one of the best exercises you can do for your hamstrings. The only problem is, it can also be one the hardest exercises to perform properly.

For years, I tried to feel my hamstrings working when I did the stiff-legged deadlift. I knew it was the best exercise to work the hip extension function of the hamstrings but I never succeeded in feeling my hams work until I came up with this simple technique.

Let me tell you, the very rep of the very first set I used this technique on, I could feel my hamstrings like never before! It was like a revelation. It was also extraordinarily simple. I guarantee if you’ve never had success with stiff-legged deadlifts, you will definitely have it after applying this technique.

The trick? Elevate your toes on weight plates while you do the exercise. That’s it! It’s very simple but very elegant in the way it addresses the kinesiology and anatomy of the hamstrings. I will explain exactly how to set it up and the mechanisms of why it works so incredibly well.

How To Do It:

Set two 25-pound weight plates on the ground butted up against each other (one for each foot). They should be right beneath the barbell you will be using for the exercise and placed side-by-side so you can set your feet on both of them.

Stand in front of the barbell with your feet half on the plates and half off. The front parts of your feet will be on the plates and your heels will be on the ground. Use the weight plates to brace your feet up so that your toes are up in the air and your feet are flexed up (known as dorsiflexion). At the end of this article you will find a link to a picture of how to set up this exercise.

Bend over and grasp the bar at about shoulder width with an overhand grip. Keep your knees locked but slightly bent while doing this exercise and keep a tight arch in your lower back.

Look directly forward while you are coming up and going back down. This will help you to keep an arch in your lower back.

Squeeze the bar off the ground slowly and deliberately, coming up only until your upper body is slightly above parallel. Any higher and you’ll start to lose tension in the hamstrings and throw it on your lower back. The real value of this exercise lies in the stretch at the bottom anyways.

Come down slowly, being absolutely sure to keep the arch in your lower back. As you near the bottom, stick your butt out and try to raise your toes as high up as possible. This dramatically intensifies the stretch you put on your hamstrings. Hold that stretch for a moment or two then reverse the direction without bouncing.

Repeat this for 5 to 7 reps. At the end of the set, place the barbell down gently then get ready to grab onto something for support. If you’ve done this technique correctly and intensely, your hamstrings will probably feel like jelly and you might find yourself prone to falling down suddenly (this is not a joke - I can’t tell you how many things I’ve had grab onto to catch myself on after doing a hard set of these)!

Why Is This Technique So Effective?

The reason this toe-raising technique is so effective for the stiff-legged deadlift comes straight from biomechanics and anatomy.

The stiff-legged deadlift exercise places the most tension on the hamstrings at the bottom, stretched position. Therefore, in order to maximize tension on the hamstrings, we must maximize the stretch on the hamstrings at that point.

In the standard stiff-legged deadlift, this is normally accomplished by simply bending at the hips. But this is not the greatest anatomical stretch that can be put on the hamstring muscles.

As you may or may not know, the muscles of the calves are tied in with the hamstrings. Therefore, placing a stretch on the calves also places more stretch on the hamstrings. This is what the weight plates accomplish - they raise your toes, putting a stretch on the calves, which then puts a greater stretch on your hamstrings.

By stretching the hamstrings at both the hip joint and the knee joint (from stretching the calves), you literally force your hamstrings to activate strongly during the stiff-legged deadlift movement.

The difference is quite amazing! Try it for just one set and I promise you’ll never go back to doing it the standard way ever again!

Affirmative Inaction

Posted December 14th, 2008
Categories: Politics

One of Abraham Lincoln’s claims to fame is the fact that he is best known for abolishing slavery. While he may have felt some personal satisfaction from liberating the Negroes from their bondage, Economy was the main reason why he made his emancipation proclamation. He wanted all of America to move into the Yankee version of capitalism. Over half a decade later, and after a series of civil rights “victories”, the roots of Affirmative Action were laid into law.

This was at a time when black civil rights leaders where being assassinated, churches were being bombed, and dogs were not the black man’s best friend. Some blacks had managed to prosper in a separate, but equal America. They become lawyers and businessmen and doctors. However, very few businesses employed blacks in a management position, as they knew their white employees would not adhere to their direction.

There was a time when all that were true. It was the same time that smokers were not treated as social pariah; professional athletics made less than the average worker and the only way to send mail was in an envelope. Times have changed. The social landscape has evolved. Technology has made a huge impact in our social fabric. Millions of families have found a home, and built their families in North America from across the globe. Blacks are no longer the scorn of White America. And while the Civil Rights amendments apply to all races, colors, and ethnic peoples, let’s face it, it is primarily applied to the African-American.

Between Affirmative Action and demands for reparations, the black community has continued to ask for government handouts needlessly for almost 2 decades. It is time for this to end.

When Italians and Irish peoples first came to Ellis Island, they were not treated any better than the people that were already settled. They faced most of the same persecution and challenges being directed to the black community as well. But they adapted. They formed close ties with their communities, and bought their way into mainstream America. That is the same for the Jews.

Throughout history, no peoples have been persecuted to the same levels as the Jews. Laws, throughout history, were made to keep them out of public office, and some times legitimate business, yet still they prosper. What are their secrets? Banding together as a community. Forming strong business groups. Supplying needed services or products to mainstream America. For some reason, since the wholesale pillaging of Africa, African-Americans cannot seem to imitate other ethnic communities in that regard. They continue to follow the African model of exploitation so that a few can maintain a hold over the many.

What I have stated may be controversial, but it is nevertheless factual. In your company, if a new Italian person is hired, he will be eating with other Italians by lunch. That is the same across most other ethnic communities, except the black community. Black people will look into themselves to find differences (Haitian against Jamaican, American against African, etc).

I believe that this goes against the spirit of Affirmative Action. Its purpose is to give a foothold into long-held white only corporations and their management staff. Most blacks today, once elevated into that position, try to take on the genetic make-up of those in the same position as them. They will not seek to promote other black candidates, in fear of looking too sympathetic, or incompetent. So no matter how many blacks may be working in the bowels of the company, the way blacks have applied Affirmative Action even amongst themselves does nothing but try and maintain a 2% average, even if there are more highly qualified blacks ready to get promoted.

The tide appears to be changing, as more and more black people have benefited from the explosion on their culture in White America, or with the incredible salaries now paid to athletes. They have re-invested into their communities to make a difference in both education and job opportunities. That being stated, if there were no more government sponsored welfare-type programs, those communities would be forced to band together to create a better environment for all their peoples.

Why should the government continue to fund programs and departments meant to uphold this archaic view of corporate practice, when for the most part, they are already in place. Let the communities speak for themselves. If a company has suspect-hiring practices, let the community speak out, and only then should the government get involved. Instead, the government should be focusing on getting kids of all ethnic communities the same opportunities for education afforded to those of privilege. Let’s put affirmative action into the hands of each individual, to succeed in whatever profession they excel in, instead of limiting their own job opportunities to about 2% in each company.

The Ugly American Returns!

Posted December 14th, 2008
Categories: Politics

Originally published in 1958, “The Ugly American” (Lederer & Burdick) documented American blunders abroad and our failure to identify that what we termed communism in undeveloped countries was merely the screams of hunger and hopelessness becoming manifest. 15 years later, we extricated ourselves from Vietnam and licked our wounds for 30 years, finally coming to some sort of accommodation with free fire zones, Agent Orange, and My Lai. Never again, we swore. We would protect our nation’s security but only move into war zones when gross injustice or humanitarian concerns demanded a response — Somalia, Bosnia, the first Gulf War.

We felt relief: a line in the sand had been drawn that we would not cross. The new American protocol called for self-protection but also restraint, a hint of nobility, and the belief that, above all, we were the primary bastion of freedom, diversity, and the rule of law.

September 11 shook that hard-fought-for ideal. No longer must we simply protect our borders but now we had to look around us wherever we were - at the stranger waiting for a train, the sweating, swarthy fellow traveler at the airport, the foreigners in the upstairs apartment.

We felt betrayed. The quid pro quo of “You leave us alone and we’ll leave you alone” went awry. Those who hate us were intruding into our private space. We felt violated. In a predictable reaction, we struck out, seeking the enemy in the hills and caves of Afghanistan where our agony had been meticulously planned with premeditation and cold indifference to our pain.

For two years, we slowly revised our goals, our ideals, our national commitments. Our outraged sense of self, revulsion, and anger gradually overcame our democratic belief in the rights of all to national self-determination. To fight the enemy, we became him. We adopted his mindset of the ends justifies the means. Angry and frustrated at his ability to strike at our very heart and make our world fearful and dangerous, we morphed into him, using offense as a means of defense against the terrifying vulnerability we feared to face.

In 2003, the decision was made to openly attack a sovereign nation state which, although famous for verbal saber rattling, posed no direct threat to us nor had it committed an illegal invasion or recent attack on anyone else since the last Gulf War.

With guns blazing, we marched into the OK Corral. Despite the absolute predictability of enemy combatants fading into the general population rather than standing their ground and being annihilated, we were “surprised” at the ease of entering Baghdad. We had forgotten the lessons of our own Revolutionary War when it became clear that standing face-to-face with well-supplied redcoat squares was a recipe for total destruction.

“Mission Accomplished” trumpeted the President, the Administration, the temporarily impotent and sleeping media. The worst was over. There were now simply “mopping up” operations left in a country which should be overwhelmingly grateful for what we had achieved. Instead, of course, more U.S. troops would die after our mission was “accomplished” than in the hot war itself.

Why the surprise? Once again, as in the days of Vietnam, the Tet Offensive, the bombing of Cambodia, once again the face of the Ugly American was exposed to the world.

Why are we hated? We are the superpower, the bully in the school yard.

Difficult as it is to forge an uneasy truce with us when we act with restraint and decorum, it becomes impossible when we throw our weight around and beat our collective chest with pride, hubris, and the will to move alone without trying to rally allies or international support. The Ugly American is loose in the streets of the Middle East, a target for all, a friend of none: arrogant, defiant, outcast, and alone.

Never again, we said. Oops - the isolation and the hate is back. We can now have the satisfaction of knowing we generated it all by ourselves. Who needs an enemy when we have us?
